Swallow Falls

Swallow Falls is a picturesque waterfall just outside of Betws-y-coed.

The Swallow Falls are considered to be one of the loveliest spots of North Wales. Here the river rushes down from the mountains. Crags and jagged rocks divide the stream into a number of foaming cascades. A mile further on are the famous Swallow Falls, where the Llugwy river hurls itself into a spectacular chasm.

Nearby is the miners bridge

Historical Significance: Originally, the bridge was constructed to allow miners to cross the River Llugwy to the lead and zinc mines on the Gwydir Estate. Over time, as mining became less prominent, the bridge transformed from an industrial pathway to a popular attraction for those seeking natural beauty and tranquility.

Design and Structure: The bridge’s design is steeped in practicality. It’s a wooden slatted bridge positioned high above the rushing waters of the River Llugwy. The structure is quite steep and, when viewed from a distance, it almost appears as a ladder across the water. This design ensured miners could cross the river, especially during times of heavy flow, without the bridge being washed away.

Nature’s Embrace: Today, the Miner’s Bridge is enveloped by verdant woodlands, moss-covered rocks, and the melodious sounds of birds chirping. The river below offers a dramatic backdrop with its white waters cascading over rocks, providing a mesmerizing sight, especially after heavy rainfall.

Walking Trails: The area around the bridge serves as a starting point for several walking trails that meander through the lush woodlands, leading to hidden waterfalls, serene glades, and panoramic viewpoints. Whether you’re an avid trekker or just someone looking for a leisurely stroll, the trails offer something for everyone.

Visitor Information: Due to its narrowness and steep incline, visitors are advised to tread cautiously while crossing the bridge. It’s also recommended to wear suitable footwear, especially during wet conditions.
